I have hiked Stinson Mountain twice.  But neither had the clear view of today.  With the last few snowstorms, the mountain is a winter wonderland.  The trees are laden with snow.  The sky was a bright clear blue.

Last spring, I hiked it with some of my family.

This is the same view in the today.

But I need to go back and hike it Sunday. Why, because today I cheated, so to speak.  Today I snowmobiled to the top with my husband.  At one point, we were breaking the trail.  It appeared the groomer had made it most of the way but had turned around near the top.  At that point, Tom broke the trail the rest of the way up.

I wanted to stop and take pictures of the snow hanging from the trees along the trail.  I needed to duck to get under some, they were so heavy with snow.  But if I did stop, I would have sunk in the snow, it was that deep.  I kept saying to myself, “keep going, keep going.”  The reward was amazing.  Below is a gallery of the pictures from the top of Stinson Mt and a picture of the trail map posted at one of the snowmobile trail intersections.

If you are planning on hiking Stinson this weekend, the hiking trail was not packed out since the last snowfall.  But the snowmobile trail is.  I’m sure the hiking trail will be soon. I’m sure someone will hike it this weekend.  Maybe I’ll see you there Sunday.

Have you ever seen a sky so blue?

The pain in my back reminds me, this was our first ride of the season.  Advil will be my friend for the next few days.

-2.2

-2.2

Tom and I went up to Pittsburgh, NH on the first.  When we got there the temp was -2 in the sun at 11:00 in the morning.  I have no clue as to what the wind chill was but it was cold!!.  Most of the pictures I took were of our second day.  It was to cold on the first.  I did not want to take my mittens off to take a picture.  We usually ride for 100 miles in a 3 -4 hour span.  We only did 65.  It was just to cold.  The second day with did over 90 miles.

Great trails in Pittsburgh, NH

On the second it was much warmer.  Granted, the temp. in the morning was reading -9.  But by the afternoon it was up to a balmy 25.   The trails in Pittsburgh were nice and flat.  The Ridge Runners did a great job grooming the trails.   The only trails that weren’t that great were the ones leading to Young’s.  But that’s typical.  There is just to much traffic in that local with everyone going to fuel up.  But once you get out in the woods, the trails were awesome.

We went down towards Colebrook but the trails were not a nice.  There were quite a few washouts.  Corridor 18 out of Coleman State Park toward The Balsams was terrible.  It did not look like they had groomed it since the first of the year.  We did catch up to a couple of groomers,  but the washouts and ruts were to many the groomers didn’t make it much better.  If they continue to have cold weather and get some more snow the groomers may be able to get those trails into better shape.  Best be is to stay north of town in Pittsburgh.

With the temps being so cold we had issues with our helmets fogging up.  Tom usually uses Rain-ex windshield cloths on them. But I had thrown them out over the summer.  I would not use them on my windshield. They leave a cloudy film on the glass.  But they work great on the plastic shield of the helmets.  I will make sure we get more before we go on our next ride.

garyWhile in Pittsburgh we stay at  Spruce Cone Cabins.  They are on Lake Francis.  They are always nice and clean with easy access to the trails.  The owner, Gary, is an avid hunter.  You can tell by the display of animal in the office.

We are going to try to go up to the Plymouth-Rumney area some time next week, weather permitting.  So pray to the snow gods for more snow so us snowmobilers can have more fun.  On Jan 18th, there is a vintage ride sponsored by the Baker River Valley Snowmobile Club.   We will be participating in that.  We did it last year. A great time was had by all.  Watch for pictures.

I must get back to quilting.

See you on the trails.
